Bellway Hatton Gate Development Begins in Northstowe

Work has now started on Bellway’s new Hatton Gate development off Station Road, bringing another part of Northstowe’s growth into view. A recent drone image shows the site at the early groundworks stage, on land west of the B1050 between Northstowe and Willingham.

The development will provide 107 new homes . Bellway’s approved plans cover 104 of them, with the remaining three plots expected to come forward separately as self-build or custom-build homes. The site will include a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom properties . Of these, 61 homes will be for private sale, 43 will be affordable housing, and three will be self-build plots.

The homes are expected to include modern features such as air source heat pumps, electric vehicle charging points and fibre broadband connections. The development is also planned to include open green space, water features and a children’s play area.

The first homes are expected to go on sale in July, with the first residents moving in by December 2026. However, council housing documents suggest the overall build could continue into 2030, so local people are likely to see the site develop gradually over the next few years.

The area also has some interesting history. Information prepared for Northstowe Town Council says the land was once linked to Southwell Farm and was used for farming in the early 1900s. From the 1930s to the 1960s, parts of it were used as orchard land. Suggested road names for the development reflect that history, with ideas linked to farming and orchards.

There are also plans for a separate commercial or community building on the wider site. That application was submitted in July 2025 and was still being considered in April 2026.

While Hatton Gate is a fairly small development compared with the wider Northstowe project, it is still an important part of the town’s continued expansion. Northstowe as a whole is expected to deliver around 10,000 homes over time, and this 107-home scheme is another step in that long-term plan.

Lidl consults on plans for Northstowe’s first supermarket

Northstowe, Cambridgeshire (29 December 2025) — Lidl GB has launched a public consultation on proposals for a new foodstore at Northstowe, on land of the former Pentair Hypro EU industrial site on Station Road.

If delivered, the scheme would bring a larger-format grocery option to the new town, expanding local choice for a fast-growing community planned for up to 10,000 homes and around 25,000–26,000 residents as build-out continues.

Lidl’s consultation states the store would sit on Station Road (the B1050), a key route through the northern side of Northstowe and a main connection towards Longstanton and villages beyond. The proposed site is also separate from the emerging town centre plans, which are intended to serve the full settlement as it matures.

Because of its roadside position, the proposed supermarket would not only serve Northstowe residents but could also attract shoppers from nearby villages within the wider catchment previously used to plan Northstowe’s local-centre retail offer (typically framed as a short “primary” drive-time area plus a wider “secondary” zone).

A boost for day-to-day living — especially for households without a car

Northstowe sits about 10km north-west of Cambridge and is being built alongside the guided busway, which is a key public transport link for many residents. But retail strategy work for the area has historically highlighted how “main food” trips were dominated by larger out-of-town supermarkets — particularly the Tesco Extra at Bar Hill.

That pattern was not just anecdotal. Earlier evidence used in Northstowe planning material recorded Tesco Extra, Bar Hill taking the largest share of “most recent main food shop” responses in the relevant survey zone (55%), with a similarly high share for “other main food shop” trips (41%). Separate environmental statement material for Northstowe Phase 1 also describes the Bar Hill Tesco Extra as a major out-of-catchment draw, and records its net sales floorspace at 9,392 sq m — vastly larger than typical village convenience stores.

A Northstowe store on Station Road could therefore reduce the need for longer, car-dependent journeys for a full weekly shop, by providing a closer “main shop” option alongside the smaller day-to-day convenience offer in surrounding villages. Lidl says the site is intended to be “easily accessible”, with pedestrian and cycle routes passing the store and routes designed to lead directly to the entrance.

Size, facilities, and parking

According to the consultation material, the proposals include:

A new Lidl foodstore with a net sales area of 1,529 sq m
“Modern in-store facilities” including the in-store bakery and customer toilets
115 car parking spaces, including:
6 disabled bays
6 parent-and-child bays
2 electric vehicle charging spaces, with capacity to add more in future
Landscaping intended to screen the site, with retention of existing boundary trees where possible
Solar panels expected to provide around 25% of the store’s energy requirements

The 1,529 sq m net sales figure also aligns with Lidl’s published “standard” new-store specification in its UK site requirements (which lists 1,529 sq m sales area, plus ancillary space, for a typical format).

Jobs and local economic impact

Lidl’s consultation boards say the store would deliver up to 40 new local jobs . The same material sets out headline pay and employment terms, including:

Minimum hourly pay from £13.00 , rising to £13.95 with length of service
A commitment not to use zero-hours contracts
Recruitment typically focused on a store’s primary catchment, with the consultation stating that around 80% of roles are often filled locally

Sustainability and sourcing

Beyond the solar panels referenced in the proposals summary, Lidl’s consultation also lists several in-store measures intended to reduce energy and environmental impact, including building management systems, motion sensors, overnight lighting controls, and low-carbon refrigeration. It also claims that rapid EV charging can provide up to 80% charge in approximately 50 minutes (depending on battery type).

On food and sourcing, the consultation promotes a “best of British” message, stating that Lidl aims to source and support domestic farmers, and claims two-thirds of its products come from British suppliers, with 100% of fresh meat, eggs, milk, butter and cream described as British-sourced. It also says Lidl sells over 200 Fairtrade-certified products through the year.

Lidl also references wider charitable work, including support intended to help deliver over 5 million meals every year via surplus food redistribution, and a fundraising target that would take its NSPCC total to £10m .

Regenerating a brownfield site

Lidl describes the project as the redevelopment of a currently vacant brownfield site, regenerating the former industrial land on Station Road. The consultation site plan shows the store building set behind a customer car park, with vehicle access from Station Road and pedestrian connections indicated along the frontage.

Lidl says it is preparing a planning application for submission to the Council. If approved, the company will then “set out a further construction timetable”.

No build programme or opening date has been published at this stage. However, recent UK commentary around Lidl schemes often references build programmes in the region of 26–30 weeks once work starts on site (varying by complexity and enabling works).

Mapping a New Town: Creating a 3D Digital Twin of Northstowe

First-of-its-kind digital 3D map of Northstowe, showing the new town in its current state of development.

How do you show the true scale of a new town still under construction when the only freely available imagery is years out of date?

That was the challenge at Northstowe , the major new settlement just outside Cambridge. On standard web maps, large parts of the town either didn’t exist or appeared as bare ground. On the ground, hundreds of families were already living in new streets, with more phases well underway.

To bridge that gap, Skytech Cambridge captured more than 40,000 high-resolution aerial photographs and used them to build a true-to-scale 3D digital model and 2D map of Northstowe, covering over 615 acres of current development. As of this summer, around 1,750 homes in the town are occupied – all of them now visible and measurable in the model.

Northstowe: a new town in the spotlight

The guided busway between Cambridge and St Ives stops at Northstowe and provides a convenient way for workers, students and tourists to reach the city centre.

Northstowe is one of the most significant new towns in Cambridgeshire. Planned as a long-term growth area on and around the former RAF Oakington airfield, it is intended to deliver thousands of new homes alongside schools, community facilities, green space and transport links.

Progress on the ground has been closely watched. The town has already attracted national attention as one of the initial sites chosen for a new government taskforce to accelerate stalled housing , announced by Rachel Reeves. That focus on delivery makes it even more important to understand what is actually happening on site, not just what is shown on historic satellite imagery or in planning documents.

Yet rapid build-out creates its own problem: by the time new houses, roads and open spaces appear on traditional mapping, they may already have changed again. For planners, developers and infrastructure partners, that lag makes decision-making harder than it needs to be.

From drone flights to a digital twin

The Keepmoat development in Northstowe

Skytech Cambridge’s solution was to create a living, accurate picture of Northstowe as it exists today .

We flew the full 615-acre area, including all current housing phases, schools, local centres, key roads and surrounding open space. Flying at consistent altitude and overlap, we collected more than 40,000 images across the town.

Those images were then processed using photogrammetry techniques to:

Reconstruct a detailed 3D model of buildings, streets and landscape
Generate a high-resolution 2D orthomosaic map – a single, seamless image that can be measured and used as a base layer

Everything is accurately georeferenced, so the 3D model and 2D map can be aligned with existing GIS datasets, CAD drawings and planning information without guesswork.

What the model shows

With a GSD of 1 cm/pixel across 248 hectares, the 2D GeoTIFF map provide significantly more detail than Google Maps and is fully up to date.

The result is a browser-based digital twin of Northstowe that anyone involved in the project can access on a standard device – no specialist software required.

In 3D , users can orbit, pan and zoom across the town to see the whole settlement at once. Roof forms, building heights, street layouts and relationships between new neighbourhoods are all clear at a glance.

In 2D , the orthomosaic provides a crisp, up-to-date basemap for more technical work. Planners and consultants can overlay red lines, infrastructure corridors, land ownership boundaries, transport proposals or environmental constraints, confident that the ground image beneath is current rather than several years old.

For anyone who wants to understand what has actually been built at Northstowe , this combination of 3D and 2D data is far more informative than a handful of static site photos or an outdated satellite view.

Who uses this kind of data?

Highly detailed 3D models (shown above) provide planners at all stages with an accurate, up-to-date view of how their development is evolving on the ground .

Although Northstowe is a single town, the model has clear value for a wide range of professionals working on and around the site.

Local authority and planning policy teams can see how the physical town is developing against expectations. Urban designers and masterplanners can study how different phases knit together, and how future phases might be shaped. Housebuilders and strategic land promoters can use the model as a reference point for masterplans, feasibility studies and design options.

Altitude Angel Enters Administration: Impact on UK Drone UTM and Operators

It’s unfortunate to learn that Altitude Angel has entered administration. The company played a pivotal role in the UK drone ecosystem, providing an accessible, centralised platform for UAS operators to review airspace restrictions and obtain digital flight authorisations within controlled zones.

On 7 October 2025, FRP Advisory were appointed as joint administrators, drawing a line under a decade in which Altitude Angel helped shape how uncrewed aviation is integrated with traditional air traffic services. For many commercial pilots and hobbyists alike, this creates immediate uncertainty about the availability of data and authorisation workflows they had come to rely on.

Founded in 2014 by Richard Parker and headquartered in Reading, Altitude Angel set out to deliver global-scale tools for safe, routine drone operations. Its mission evolved into a full UTM stack that connected regulators, ANSPs , airports, infrastructure owners and operators through a common digital backbone. The company’s messaging consistently emphasised compliance, safety and interoperability, and it backed that up with an expanding portfolio that served both enterprise infrastructure managers and day-to-day pilots, including resources for UK operators on CAA drones guidance .

A statement on the Altitude Angel website on Tuesday 7th October 2025 confirmed the news

Two flagship technologies defined the brand. GuardianUTM offered a cloud platform for airspace and land access management, enabling quick approvals, auditable records, and a digital interface for both airspace managers and operators. ARROW provided wide-area surveillance and data fusion, designed to enable BVLOS flights by creating a shared picture of crewed and uncrewed traffic that could be consumed as a service. Together, these tools aimed to make authorisations faster for pilots, more defensible for asset owners, and more scalable for authorities that needed to supervise increasingly complex low-level airspace.

Altitude Angel also led some of the UK’s most visible UAS initiatives. Project Skyway proposed and then built out sections of a 165-mile drone corridor across England, intended to demonstrate routine BVLOS operations without segregating airspace.

The effort, delivered with partners such as BT and supported through the UK’s Future Flight Challenge , concluded pilots and demonstrations in early 2025 and showcased how “separation as a service” could unlock practical use cases, from inspections and logistics to emergency response. This program was more than a headline, it was a living laboratory that influenced standards conversations and public understanding of what modern UTM can deliver.

Crucially, Altitude Angel cultivated relationships with established aviation actors. Its strategic partnership with NATS Services signalled a maturing interface between ANSP-grade safety culture and digital UTM capabilities. For UK operators, that partnership promised a clearer pathway to integrated services, where digital approval, surveillance data, and procedural oversight would align with how controlled airspace is managed today. In Europe and beyond, collaborations with organisations like AirHub pointed to a model in which local mission-planning tools could plug into a common UTM fabric, improving compliance while reducing friction for day-to-day flying.

None of that means the company’s approach was without detractors. Pricing and charge points within approval workflows sometimes split opinion among airspace stakeholders, particularly where previously informal or manual processes were being digitised and monetised. Yet the alternative is not a zero-cost world, it is a patchwork of inconsistent rules, paper-based approvals and fragmented data, which tends to slow innovation and increase risk. The best lesson to take from Altitude Angel’s trajectory is that sustainable UTM requires clear public value, defensible safety cases, and economic models that work for both infrastructure providers and the operator community. That is a balancing act, and it becomes even harder when macroeconomic headwinds and regulatory complexity increase the cost of doing business across the sector.

What happens next matters for everyone who flies or depends on aerial data. Operators will want continuity for airspace data layers, NOTAM awareness, and digital authorisation portals that have become part of pre-flight routines. Airports, ports and landowners that adopted GuardianUTM workflows will look for a migration path that preserves their audit trail and policy configurations. Regulators and ANSPs face pressure to maintain confidence in BVLOS corridors, especially where trials like Skyway established momentum for real-world services. The industry should push for a managed transition that keeps essential datasets available, even if that means interim hosting or fast-tracked integrations with alternative UTM providers.

There are also reasons to be cautiously optimistic about the broader UTM landscape. The past two years saw increasing ANSP engagement, more rigorous demonstrations of detect-and-avoid services, and partnerships that pair mission planning with airspace services in a modular way. If those trends continue, the UK can still capitalise on the groundwork laid by Altitude Angel, provided the community prioritises interoperability, open standards, and continuity plans that prevent critical services dissolving when a single vendor falters. The NATS partnership model and European collaborations offer starting points for that conversation, since they already anticipate a federated ecosystem where different tools interoperate rather than compete as monoliths. Altitude Angel’s absence will be felt because it helped normalise what modern UTM can look like, turning abstract policy into usable tools. While its fee structure and growth bets invited debate, the company advanced the conversation in the UK from pilots and proofs to scalable services. If the community can preserve the momentum around digital authorisation, shared surveillance, and pragmatic BVLOS corridors, then the legacy of this chapter may still be progress, not retreat. The work now is to ensure continuity, learn from the economics, and double down on an interoperable ecosystem that outlives any single provider.

Reading Case Study: Drone Imagery Highlights Rooflight Corrosion Risk

We were appointed to undertake a rapid drone survey of a commercial property in Reading as part of an end-of-tenancy condition assessment. From the air, our high-resolution imagery revealed a detail that is impossible to see from ground level and costly to verify with manual access.

A barrel-vaulted rooflight showing clear signs of coating distress on the white aluminium capping straps. In several frames the paint presents as blistered and chalky, and there is evidence of light lichen growth—classic indicators that moisture has found a way beneath the finish and that the protective system is no longer performing as intended.

Why does this matter? Those slender capping straps do more than tidy the appearance of the rooflight; they clamp the glazing sheets and help maintain weather-tightness. When moisture penetrates a damaged or poorly adhered coating on aluminium, under-film corrosion can begin to creep. Often described as filiform corrosion , it travels in thread-like paths beneath the paint, progressively lifting the coating. As the corrosion swells and spreads, it undermines the bond and can reduce the effective section of the metal beneath. Over time the strap loses clamping pressure, fixings can slacken, and what begins as a coating defect becomes a functional risk. Water can track in at laps and edges, wind uplift forces have more to work with during storms, and in the worst case a panel can be compromised outright.

From a surveying perspective, the value of seeing this clearly and contextually —strap, fixings, glazing, and adjacent roof fabric in one sharp frame— cannot be overstated . It means the team can move directly from observation to scoping, without guessing at extent or paying for exploratory access just to confirm what’s already apparent in the images.

This gave the commercial surveying client everything needed to compile a targeted schedule of works for the dilapidations report: clear evidence, credible context, and a consistent photographic record that sits comfortably in professional documentation.

For landlords and tenants navigating end-of-lease obligations, this approach pays dividends. The landlord receives a defensible, date-stamped evidence base that supports proactive maintenance and protects asset value. The tenant gains clarity on the extent of works and the likely costs, reducing grey areas in negotiations and helping to close out obligations promptly. For the surveyor and project manager, the imagery translates into faster quantification and pricing: because the defects are captured at true angles and sensible stand-off distances, it is easier to measure, specify, and communicate what needs to happen and where.

There is a safety dividend too. Traditional elevated inspections expose people to working-at-height risk and can interrupt operations below. By contrast, our pilots operate within a robust safety and compliance framework, coordinating with site management to keep flight lines clear and ensure privacy and data security are respected. The result is a full-coverage visual inspection with negligible operational impact, delivered to a standard that stands up in technical reports and stakeholder briefings alike.

It turns what would once have been a “scaffold and see” exercise into a precise programme of remedial work. How SkyTech Cambridge is using drone photography and new technology to better solve old problems.

Our Lady of The Assumption and The English Martyrs (OLEM) is one of Cambridge’s most iconic churches. Not only because it's Cambridge’s highest building, the church stands tall in a city full of stunning architecture.

Whether you’re walking past and looking up at the 65-metre tall spire, or getting a slightly closer look at the Gothic features from a bus on the way into town, it’s a brilliant landmark. Cambridge is proud to call OLEM its own.

SkyTech Cambridge has recently partnered with OLEM, using expert drone photography to survey the building and save the church thousands during their ongoing restoration work.

Drone operator and SkyTech’s founder, Marc Mann , and OLEM’s General Manager, Annelize Coetzer , tell us more about this blueprint for how new technology can better solve old problems.

Building surveys: The old problem

When it comes to preserving and restoring historic architecture, you face a costly battle. OLEM faces this same challenge as they work through several projects as part of their Aspire Building Fund .

Essential six-figure repairs to the boiler system, finials and parapets have already been completed. Masonry and roof repairs are next, with the total cost projected to be around £1 million.

Annelize noted,

"Historic buildings are at the heart of our towns and cities. We’re making sure they’re not going anywhere, and their incredible cultural impact remains… but the cost challenges aren’t going anywhere either."

Buildings matter: Past, present and future

OLEM was built as part of the Gothic Revival in the late 1800s. Revival is an interesting word, closely linked to restoration and preservation.

Annelize explains,

"Across all faiths, places of worship have always been one of the ways humans seek to reflect something bigger than themselves. They become a place of rest and restoration for people and communities.

So, protection and preservation are at the centre of what OLEM and other churches are all about. The beautiful building needs that same focus now as we secure its place in our city for generations to come."

The cost of surveying and assessing buildings in the past

With a plan in place for the future, OLEM needed to find the best way to move the work forward. The challenges include costs and minimising disruption to ongoing work at the church.

In the past, initial assessments have involved extensive (and costly) scaffolding bills and surveys carried out by abseiling photographers. You’ll quickly see why this process is costly and inefficient:

Scanning an entire building while abseiling is a lengthy process
Full scaffolding may also be needed before you even begin finding the problem
Site teams often wait days or weeks for visual data before they can progress the next stage of the project

Even then, the survey results are not guaranteed to give your architect and contractors all the information needed. You may find yourself arranging further surveys, meaning tens of thousands of pounds and massive amounts of time can easily be lost, before you even start.

The A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet improvement project is one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades currently underway in the East of England. Part of a £1 billion scheme led by National Highways, this initiative will transform travel between Milton Keynes and Cambridge, tackling congestion and improving journey times for thousands of road users every day.

The need for improvements

The A428 between the Black Cat roundabout and Caxton Gibbet junction has long been a bottleneck, with frequent traffic delays during peak commuter hours due to single-lane carriageways and outdated junction designs. Recognising the urgent need for a modern road infrastructure to support regional growth, National Highways secured approval for an extensive upgrade in 2021, with construction starting in 2022. Darwin Green: A New Chapter in Cambridge's Urban Landscape

Located just two miles from Cambridge’s historic city centre, Darwin Green is a significant new residential development designed to offer a blend of modern housing and community-focused amenities. The project, which was initially approved in 2013, aims to deliver up to 1,593 new homes alongside key infrastructure such as schools, green spaces, and local services. The development will be accessible from entrances located on Hutingdon Road and Cambridge Road located close to junction 32 of the A14.

Development Overview

Darwin Green is being developed in multiple phases, with the master plan carefully structured to integrate with the surrounding urban environment. The development includes a range of housing options, from one and two-bedroom apartments to larger family homes. This diversity is intended to accommodate a broad spectrum of residents, from professionals and young families to retirees.

At the heart of the development is a large central park, providing green space for recreation and relaxation. Pedestrian-friendly pathways and cycling routes have been incorporated to promote sustainable transport and easy connectivity to Cambridge’s wider transport network.

BDW3 – Plans for 210 new homes and apartments on the eastern side of the development are under council review. This phase aims to establish a direct link with the central park.
BDW4 – Situated on the western boundary, this section will provide 351 new homes and apartments, with the planning application currently under consideration.
BDW5 and BDW6 – Covering the northern part of the site, these phases are set to deliver 410 homes and apartments. Construction was approved in December 2021 and is now underway.

A Church Lost In Time

The hauntingly beautiful ruins of St. James' Church in Bawsey, near King's Lynn, stand as a testament to centuries of history, resilience, and mystery. Perched on an elevated site that once overlooked an estuary of the Gaywood River, the church dates back to the early 12th century and is believed to have originally been a Late Saxon minster.

The site’s rich past, coupled with its striking architectural remnants, made it an ideal candidate for our latest 3D modeling project . Using state-of-the-art drone technology, we meticulously captured high-resolution aerial imagery to create an accurate and immersive digital reconstruction of the ruins.

Bawsey was once a thriving medieval village, but as the landscape changed and water levels receded, its population dwindled. By 1517, the church was likely no longer in use, and records suggest it had already fallen into ruin by the late 18th century. Today, the site consists of imposing stone walls, a towering Norman archway, and remnants of a central bell tower, all constructed from locally sourced carrstone, flint, and limestone.

The church gained wider attention in 1998 when the ‘Time Team’ television programme conducted an excavation, unearthing a female skeleton with evidence of cranial injuries. Initial theories speculated she might have been a victim of a Viking raid, but further analysis suggested that the wounds resulted from an ancient surgical procedure known as trephination, performed over 1,300 years ago.

Bringing History To Life With Drone Technology

Recognising the historical and cultural significance of St. James' Church, we set out to create a detailed 3D model of the ruins . Our drones captured precise aerial data, mapping every inch of the remaining structure with photogrammetry techniques. We utilised a combination of oblique and nadir image capture, ensuring comprehensive coverage of every architectural feature. The High-resolution sensor on the drone collected overlapping images, which were then processed using specialised photogrammetry software to generate a detailed 3D point cloud.

Once the raw data was collected, it was refined to create a high-fidelity digital model. The model was then further processed to generate a textured mesh, enhancing its realism and making it suitable for both research and public engagement.

The benefits of this digital preservation extend beyond academic research. The 3D model enables virtual tourism , allowing people to experience the ruins from anywhere in the world. Additionally, it provides conservationists with an invaluable tool for monitoring structural changes and planning preservation efforts.

SkyTech Cambridge has been carrying out drone surveys and inspections across London and the whole of Greater London for the best part 5 years.

Our customer base is predominantly made up of commercial property agents, land owners and estate agents who require aerial perspectives that traditional cameras cannot provide. A common drone service we carry out across London are high level roof inspections to assess their condition. For example, a number of building surveyors commission us to capture high resolution imagery as part of their building dilapidation reports.

If we use the above project as an example, where I filmed in central London right next to Paddington Station for a client. I sought permission via the formerly named National Air Traffic Services (NATS) as we were operating in the sensitive EGR 157 no-fly zone . This requires a Non Standard Flight (NSF) flight authorisation which can be completed online at https://nsf.nats.aero

Once approved, you are provided with an NSF reference number which must then be supplied to Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection (PaDP) before commencement of flight operations. This is a quick process, via a phone call, where you will be provided with a CAD number and subsequent permission to fly.

Other NSF zones across the city include Heathrow Airport, London City Airport, R156 Windsor Castle, London Heliport Battersea and R158 and R159. Fortunately, they can all be applied for using the same NSF system.

There are some areas of London that can be flown without any further permissions. A useful tool to check flight restrictions around the UK can be found at: www.dronesafetymap.com

By its very nature, London is a highly urbanised area, which can make identifying locations for safe take-off and landings challenging. It also presents additional challenges for maintaining line of sight with such a large concentration of tall buildings and other structures.

So all in all; a few hoops to jump through but it's pretty straightforward once you know the process.

How accurate is a survey performed by drone?

We have developed a precise methodology over the years to ensure that we safely and reliably capture every aspect of the target building. We also use our experience in construction to identify visual defects or anomalies while flying. These areas can then be the focus of more targeted imagery. Captured media contains GPS metadata ensuring that everything can be geolocated.

Mavic 3 Enterprise You Continue To Surprise Us!

Captured on the Brackmills Industrial Estate in Northampton, UK during a routine commercial drone survey. This photo is a JPEG from the drone with a few minor tweaks in lightroom. Correct position of the drone in relation to the sun is vital to ensure good natural levels of contrast. As is ensuring that the exposure is dialled in to ensure no highlights are burned out but the shadows retain enough detail. A blue sky and sunny day is also quite helpful!

The dynamic range on the Mavic 3 Enterprise is actually pretty amazing. It makes it the perfect drone for roof surveys, especially on sunny days, as this wide dynamic range means that highlights and shadows are well controlled and, as this photo shows, it also makes it a great drone for photography.

Of course, the M3E can also capture photos in RAW at the same time, which is a great way to ensure you have a backup in case you fail to expose correctly in camera.

Private Plane Flight To Capture The City Center

Flying at 2300ft in small plane over Cambridge city center was what it took to capture a series of photos for a regular client recently. Working to a very specific brief meant that it wasn't possible to use a drone due to the extremely wide field of view required for each of the photos. This was something that wasn't possible due to height restrictions relating to drone flights in the UK.

This example photo that we captured shows incredible detail of many of the most notable colleges and other landmarks in the city center.

Drone Roof Survey: Fast Access - Immediate Results!

We recently assisted a roofing company to assess the condition of this complex roof of a private residence in Newmarket with a comprehensive drone roof survey. This type of building is typically very difficult to assess due to the height of the structure and its variety of differing features. It would be almost impossible to fully visually assess this type of roof from a cherry picker and scaffolding, and at this stage of the initial assessment, it would be extremly costly.

The high level of detail that we can obtain using our dedicated commercial survey drones, means that after just two hours on-site, we were able to provide our roofing client with a complete set of photos covering 100% of the roof area, helping them to identify multiple defects.

Photos containing these defects can be submitted to the property owner as part of an initial defect report to support the roofing contractors suggested repair plan.

Cambridge Railway Station Seen From The Air

Cambridge's main railway station, situated at the top of Station Road, is quite often a very busy place, full of commuters coming and going on their way into London or the north of England or arriving into Cambridge.

We took this drone photo while carrying out a drone survey on a building opposite. It shows it on a quiet Sunday morning with very little commuters. Recently modernised, the station now boasts a purpose built cycle parking facility with a capacity of 2,850 spaces.

How councils are using drone technology and thermal imaging

We recently teamed up with Lincolnshire’s North Kesteven District Council’s Environmental Protection Team to raise awareness of the Smoke Free Zone in the local town using drone based thermal imaging.

Under the clean air act 1993 , smoke control areas are where people and businesses must not emit smoke from a chimney or buy or sell unauthorised fuel for use in a smoke control area, unless it's used in an exempt appliance.

DEFRA has provisioned local authorities with a budget to educate residents, located in these control areas, of their responsibilities under this legislation. There is also scope to identify potential polluting properties and those buying unauthorised fuels with the power to issue fines.

To achieve this, it is important to identify which properties within a control area have the ability to emit smoke , those that are actively emitting smoke and the method of emission.

A visual survey of the property would be the most conclusive way to achieve this. The challenge is, how do you carry out this type of survey across hundreds or even thousands of properties?

North Kesteven District Council ( NKDC ) approached Skytech Cambridge Ltd to assist them with the data collection and analysis of homes located within their ‘ Smoke Control Zones ’.

It was important for NKDC to consider the most efficient approach to achieve this with a key focus on its environmental impact .

It would traditionally require a team to travel around in conventional vehicles for several days manually logging data in order to gather the necessary data for each property.

NKDC and Skytech Cambridge knew that there were more efficient and environmentally friendly methods to obtain the required data.

Due to the large area of the SCZ in North Hykeham, it was necessary to split it into two more manageable virtual zones.

North Hykeham - ‘North Zone’

Consisting of 313 Buildings . A mixture of residential and commercial properties reside in this Smoke Control Area.

North Hykeham - ‘South Zone’

Consisting of 880 Buildings . This larger area, comprising a mix of private and local authority residential properties, has a number of large victorian style houses with active multi-room chimney installations.

These properties would serve as a benchmark for the data analysis.

Drone Capture:

Using a pre-configured flight path to incorporate all properties located inside the two control zones, a drone was flown over the area in a grid pattern taking over 35,000 high resolution photos .

The flights are pre-programmed and can be repeated at any time. It allows us to generate data that can be replicated over weeks, months or even years .

Each of the 35,000 photos carries a resolution of 20 megapixels (5280×3956) with precise embedded GPS data and date/time stamps.

This level of detail allows us and NKDC to carry out detailed inspections of any suspected properties. This type of remote inspection would be impossible using conventional satellite imagery.

Map Comparison:

Our high resolution maps carry not only significantly more detail than Google Maps , they also carry the most up to date information. Google Maps data can often be months or even years out of date.

Ultra high resolution map:

We used the resulting photos to digitally ‘stitch together’ and create a composite ultra high resolution map of the area.

The map (below) is incredibly detailed and would allow Skytech Cambridge and NKDC to carry out a thorough survey of each property without having to leave the office.

It also serves as a captured point in time for future reference.

3D digital twin:

In addition to the high resolution map, Skytech Cambridge also processed the collected data to create complex 3D digital models of both of the control zones.

These fully interactive, correctly scaled and centimeter accurate models of the area are available online via a private link and are accessible for anyone with a web browser.

Thermal Imaging:

In addition to data collected during the daytime, it was decided that the use of our Thermal Imaging Drones would provide extra insight into identifying properties with chimneys or log burners . Their unique heat characteristics make them straightforward to identify. Our thermal drones can capture thermal photos and video.

Ultra high resolution thermal map:

In this example, comprising of nearly 14,000 thermal photos , a composite thermal map was created of the ‘South Control Zone’, providing unparalleled levels of detail and insight into each property.

The example below, taken from a section of this map, highlights one house in particular that shows an array of active chimneys which would require further investigation.

Data Analysis:

Using a combination of drone photos, high resolution drone maps, 3D digital twins and thermal imaging media, Skytech Cambridge created a database classifying each of the properties .

Targeted Analysis:

Once all of the properties had been classified, it was now possible to carry out more targeted evidence gathering. Properties that fitted certain criteria could be re-visited and more precise data could be collected.

In most instances, we can capture the required media (including a 3D digital twin where applicable) along with relevant GPS data and timestamps. We can also compile an associated database or make the raw data available in any format.

How drones can be used to survey churches and cathedrals

Church drone survey and filming

Drones are incredibly useful tools for surveying old buildings such as heritage sites, churches and cathedrals due to their ability to access hard-to-reach areas and capture detailed imagery.

We recently had the pleasure of flying one of our drones inside the Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs (OLEM) in Cambridge. They are currently undergoing a fundraiser to secure investment for a considerable amount of structural repairs needed to the outside of the church.

Our Lead Drone Pilot, Marc commented: “ I captured drone footage for them which they plan to use in a documentary about the church to raise awareness and funds. I also carried out an external drone survey for their main surveyor so that they could assess the structure and identify any repairs that needed to be carried out. ”

Creative output aside, drones provide the following benefits for those involved with the maintenance of heritage buildings:

Aerial Inspection : Drones are equipped with high-resolution cameras which capture aerial images of the entire building (internal and external), providing a comprehensive view of its structure and surroundings. This can help to identify any structural issues, damage, or deterioration.

Close-Up Inspection : Drones can safely fly close to the building facade, capturing detailed images of specific areas that are difficult to access or unsafe for people to inspect directly. This allows for a thorough examination of architectural features, materials, and potential areas of concern.

Safety and quick setup : Drones are easy and cost-efficient to set up while avoiding the need for building inspectors to hire bulky scaffolding, ladders, and cherry-pickers which reduces the likelihood of accidents and injuries during the inspection process.

" Churches, by their very nature, are aging structures so it’s important that a proactive approach to maintenance is adopted. Identifying potential issues as early as possible can save time and money. It is not practical and often not possible to fully establish the condition of the structure from the ground, therefore an assessment is best carried out above the ground. The problem with this type of elevated survey is that they traditionally require either expensive scaffolding or motorised access, such as a cherry picker. "

Marc continues: “ When you factor in the cost, logistics, time constraints and safety considerations these types of manual surveys attract; a drone survey is the obvious modern approach to gathering the required data for making informed decisions about church renovation or repair .”

How we captured one of the UKs most iconic half marathon events with drone technology.

Successful drone video capture at the Cambridge Half Marathon 2024

SkyTech Cambridge were back on the starting line at this year’s Cambridge Half Marathon providing race organisers with a unique perspective of the course and its surroundings for security and crowd monitoring purposes.

Technical summary

“We’ve traditionally either used a WiFi connection from the site or streamed over a cellular network (4G/5G). Starlink recently introduced its satellite internet system which works by connecting to a small portable satellite dish that gives us a really stable and fast internet connection anywhere in the world. Our devices connect to this dish either by WiFi or a wired connection.” comments Marc Mann, Chief Drone Pilot at SkyTech Cambridge.

Having tested Starlink at the event, it is clear that fast and reliable video streaming is now achievable without having to rely on oversubscribed cellular networks. We were able to achieve impressive downstream and upstream speeds to supply an uninterrupted 1080p live stream to our client. Used in conjunction with our high capacity portable power station, we are now able to provide completely ‘off the grid’ live streaming, anywhere.

Operational summary

Organising any mass participating event is a major feat which is why it’s critical that any drone project planning starts months in advance. We kicked-off preparations with OSB Events (the event management company behind sporting challenges including Cambridge Half Marathon and Outlaw Triathlon) in plenty of time to plan the following:

Weather contingent plans - IP rated drones may be necessary for wet weather.
Flight safety in congested public areas - A vital aspect of our planning process is to ensure that we can operate safely around the city and reduce the risk to the public when carrying out drone operations.
Obtaining the necessary flight permissions from Cambridge City Airport to operate safely inside their restricted airspace.
Technical capabilities and client expectations - This includes a live test of all equipment prior to the event with the client.
Location scouting - To get the shots that will ultimately make the edit, it is vital that our drone pilots know their surroundings and event timings.
Client brief - Working closely with our client ensures that we fully understand their requirements from a technical and creative standpoint.

Four weeks to go until the 2024 TTP Cambridge Half Marathon

Our 2nd year supporting the prestigious Cambridge event

Having successfully worked with the Cambridge Half Marathon team in 2023, we’ve been asked to capture stunning aerial footage of this year’s highly regarded road race as well as providing the race organisers with a unique perspective of the course and its surroundings for security and crowd monitoring purposes.

Today (Monday 5th Feb 2024) marks the 4 week countdown for the thousands of runners taking on the course. Attracting over 11,000 runners from across the UK and beyond, the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon has become a must-do event for both serious athletes and casual runners alike. It offers participants a challenging yet scenic 13.1 mile course that winds its way through some of the city's most iconic landmarks and picturesque neighborhoods with a festive atmosphere, enthusiastic supporters, and a reputation for being one of the most well-organised races in the country.

Our Founder and Chief Drone Pilot, Marc Mann, commented: “It is fantastic to be invited back by organisers of the Cambridge Half Marathon, OSB Events and Two26 Photography . As reported by Business Weekly , we’ll be testing Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet connection on Sunday 3rd March. With much of the work that we carry out being in remote areas with patchy network coverage, it is expected that this exciting new technology may be the future of their connectivity requirements for drone operations.

With state-of-the-art equipment and an experienced team of pilots and camera operators, we’ve revolutionised the way in which race organisers can monitor and manage large-scale events. Using the latest drone and streaming technologies, we are able to transmit a secure high resolution live video feed, allowing organisers to monitor the movement of runners and crowds, and detect any potential security or safety issues in real-time.

The technical challenge

Live streaming at large-scale events can present significant technical challenges, particularly in areas where network connectivity is limited. Use of 4G/5G for live streaming was not possible last year due to the high contention of the network so the SkyTech Cambridge team used a high-bandwidth dedicated local wifi connection which guaranteed a high-quality live stream was transmitted.

DJI Mavic 3E and 3T major firmware update brings a host of new features

DJI releases major firmware update for its entry level enterprise drones

The update brings a wealth of new functionality to the portable commercial drone series, including terrain follow features, the ability to customize camera angles for mapping tasks, and much more.

The Mavic 3 Enterprise drone series comes in two versions: the Mavic 3E and the Mavic 3T . The Mavic 3E is primarily designed for mapping and surveying functions, while the Mavic 3T is ideal for firefighting, search and rescue, inspections, and night missions thanks to its thermal sensor.

The new firmware update, available for download now, brings the aircraft firmware of both models up to version v06.01.06.06, while the remote controller firmware can now be updated to v02.00.04.07. The DJI Pilot 2 App and DJI Assistant 2 can also be updated to v6.1.1.1 and v2.1.7, respectively.

One of the most exciting new features in the firmware update is the Terrain Follow feature for flight tasks. Both Smart Oblique and Linear tasks now support both Real-Time Follow and DSM Follow, while Oblique tasks only support DSM Follow. The update also includes a POI function, allowing the drone to circle and fly around a PinPoint to obtain omnidirectional information about the target.

To ensure a smooth update process, DJI recommends restarting the aircraft and remote controller after the update is complete. If the update fails, restart the aircraft, remote controller, and DJI Pilot 2 or DJI Assistant 2 (Enterprise Series), and retry. It's also important to ensure that the firmware of the aircraft and the remote controller, and DJI Pilot 2 all are on their latest versions, otherwise usage may be affected.

Added Terrain Follow for flight tasks : Smart Oblique and Linear tasks support both Real-Time Follow and DSM Follow. Oblique tasks only support DSM Follow.

DJI Mini 3 Pro - The drone we've all been waiting for?

Why is the new DJI Mini 3 Pro important?

It feels as if DJI are now in the habit of releasing a new drone every few months. Just as we'd recovered from the hugely anticipated and much hyped release of the Mavic 3 just after Christmas, DJI decided that the sector needed another refresh of their biggest selling consumer drone, the Mini 2. With increasing competition from the likes of Autel, Parrot and Skydio over the past year, it seems as if DJI are pulling out all of the stops to ensure that their new sub 250g drone will cement its place for the next couple of years as the consumer drone to beat.

Like the Mini 2, the new Mini 3 Pro will still weigh in under 250g, which is a hugely important consideration when purchasing a drone. In many countries, the magic figure of <250g enables drone flyers far greater freedoms compared to drones like the Mavic 3, Mavic Air2S and the DJI FPV. All of these drones weigh in well over this figure which means that without taking an A2 CofC qualification (or an equivalent license depending on your country) you may be limited to flying no closer than 150m horizontally from people. This can be reduced to 50m horizontally with this qualification but importantly you still cannot fly over people. In the UK this is only possible with either a GVC (formerly PfcO) certificate or operating a drone weighing less 250g.

The Mini 2 is no doubt still a fantastic drone for both its price point and the technology if offers. That being said, it does have a few limitations that the Mini 3 Pro is looking to address.

The Camera

The Mini 2 came with a 1/2.3" 12MP f2.8 CMOS sensor which was capable of recording video at up to 4K 30fps and capturing RAW photos. In many ways it is still a fantastic little sensor capable of taking fantastic RAW photos with enough dynamic range to create some amazing imagery providing you're careful with your exposure.

The Mini 3 Pro will sport a new 1/1.3" (0.77 inch) 48MP (true 12MP) f1.7 Quad Bayer CMOS sensor which will record video at up to 4k 60fps with HDR (High Dynamic Range). The sensor is over twice the size of the Mini 2 which lends itself to better low light captures helped by the larger fixed f1.7 aperture.

The most important aspect of this new sensor is the pixel size. It has been confirmed that each pixel will be same size as on the fantastic Mavic Air 2S measuring in at 2.4µm. Though the Air 2S comes with a larger true 20MP 1" Sensor. This is still a huge upgrade from the Mini 2 and huge technical achievement given that all of this has to be contained within a drone weighing less than 250g.

The Mini 3 Pro will be able to capture video in DJI's colour profile D-Cinelike . This flatter colour profile will allow users to have better control over the colour grading process when editing as well as potentially finer control over shadows and highlights compared to the baked in 'Normal' profiles.

The Autel Nano+ is currently the Mini 3's only comparable alternative which comes with a slightly bigger 1/1.28" f1.9 and highly regarded RYYB sensor.

The camera will also come with the ability to rotate 180° on the vertical axis to allow the camera to point completely upwards. It will also be able to rotate the camera to a vertical aspect which will make it easier to capture vertical panoramas with a reduced reliance on stitching algorithms from traditional horizontal panoramas. This will likely also lend itself well to capturing native 9:16 content for pilots that like to share their content to social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

Obstacle Avoidance Sensors

The DJI Mini 3 Pro comes with built in obstacle avoidance sensors , unlike the Mini 2, which didn't have any at all. There will be 2 large front sensors, 2 sensors pointing backwards and 2 downward facing sensors. This will give it the ability to detect obstacles from the front, back and below and will work in tandem with APAS 4.0 to detect and dynamically avoid obstacles. This system has proven itself to work extremely well on the Air 2S and the Mavic 3 so there is no reason why this won't translate equally well to the Mini 3 Pro.

The new sensors also means that some of the more complicated autonomous flight modes such as Active Track, POI, Master Shots and Spotlight will now be available.

Increased Flight Times

The batteries for the Mini 3 have a larger capacity and will allow a flight time of up to 47 minutes . However, it is expected that this flight time is based on a larger battery type that DJI will offer as a separate purchase from the standard batteries that ship with the Mini 3. The standard smaller batteries will maintain its weight class of sub-250g but it is expected that the larger batteries will tip the scale over this figure.

The Mini 3 Pro's total redesign will presumably allow better aerodynamics compared to the mini 2 (thanks in part to its larger propellers) so even with the standard batteries you can expect a flight time of between 25-30 minutes.

New Flight Controller

The Mini 3 Pro will ship in a number of different configurations. The base packages will come with the standard and well proven RC-N1 with Ocusync 3.0 and 1080p 30fps image transmission. This allows users to retain the standard configuration of using a smartphone with the DJI Fly App connected to the controller.

The higher end packages will ship with a new DJI Smart Controller with a built in 1080p high brightness screen. Having used many iterations of DJI smart controllers over the past few years, this will definitely be worth the initial investment, if your budget allows it. It is not expected that the overall brightness will be on par with the DJI RC-PRO at 1000 nits but will still be sufficiently higher than the average smartphone screen which can be challenging to operate on bright sunny days, especially with their glossy reflective screens.

If you already own the DJI RC-Pro or the original DJI Smart Controller, it is not currently know if DJI will make these compatible with the Mini 3 Pro in the future. Given that the original smart controller was eventually capable of controlling the Mini 2, there is no reason why this shouldn't be possible via a firmware update some time in the future though.

Pricing and Release Date

The DJI Mini 3 Pro with Smart Controller is expected to retail at very reasonable £859 ($1000 or €1025) and is expected to release on May 10th 2022.

DJI in 2022 - New drones on the way - Inspire 3 and Mini 3/FPV?

What can we expect from DJI in 2022?

2021 was an exciting year in the drone world. With new releases from DJI including the Mavic 3, Air 2S and its first foray into the FPV world with the DJI FPV, it seems as if DJIs dominance of the drone market will continue in 2022 with the expected release of some new drones over the coming year.

As yet, nothing has been confirmed of course, but the rumour mill is in full flow with a series of recent leaks online suggesting that DJI may be gearing up with some exciting new hardware.

Inspire 3

It may be difficult to believe that the DJI Inspire 2 was originally released way back in 2016. It is a drone that is still widely used among professionals across many different industries. Despite its age and sometimes annoying idiosyncrasies it is still considered to be one of the best drones for film work before you enter the world of heavy lift drones. The imagery that this drone can capture is still awe inspiring. Couple that with the flexibility of switchable lenses; real ATTI mode flying; ridiculous acceleration and top speed; the ability to operate in harsh environments and a relatively quick deployment time - it really is a testament to DJI that this drone is still being used around the globe in spite of its age.

In 2022, however, the drone world has changed a lot. Safety is now a much more important consideration when purchasing and operating a drone. The Inspire 2 has little of the safety features that are now considered mandatory, especially when you factor in the all of the new legislation around flying drones. Full obstacle avoidance such as APAS 5.0 found on the new Mavic 3 would be an obvious inclusion along with Airsense found on some of DJIs newer releases.

The FPV camera would likely be due a huge upgrade too. The tiny low resolution camera found on the Inspire 2, which is used as the actual 'eyes' of the aircraft, has long been considered a major limitation of the drone. I would expect for DJI to also include an iteration of the their 'Smart Controller' in some capacity too. Their M300 commercial drone already comes with this as standard and it seems inconceivable that the I3 wouldn't have something similar in 2022.

Flight times would also be due a welcome increase from the 15-20 minutes currently experienced on the I2. A lot of R&D will have gone into improving the flight efficiency of the I3 over the I2. It'll likely weigh less than its predecessor but I would expect that the unique look of the I2 will be maintained in some way. After all, it did and still does look like no other drone out there.

The recent release of DJIs 'all-in-one' cinema camera, the Ronin 4D, brought with it a new X-series camera, the X9. Previously, the Inspire 2 used the X7 and X5s as its proprietary camera systems. The new X9 system is capable of filming in 8K RAW and presumably would form the logical link between aerial filming and ground filming. Grading footage from just one system would be a dream come true for content creators. A clever move by DJI offering a unified filming system.

If and when it is released, expect a pretty hefty price tag. By then the Sony Airpeak S1 will have been out for a few months and I think that this will be the only direct competition to the Inspire 3. The Sony Airpeak is currently looking at a retail price of $8,999USD (£6800GBP) and that is without a gimbal or the actual Sony A series camera that you need to attach to it.

As with all DJI releases though, expect it to bring something to the table that raises the bar yet again.

Mini 3/FPV

When the original DJI Mini was released, it was genuinely considered by many to be a real game changer for the drone industry. It was the first commercially available drone with a 2.7K camera to weigh under 250g. Important for one huge reason. Regulations.

In the UK, any drone weighing under 250g is exempt from the vast majority of restrictions laid down to heavier drones. You can fly them over people (with the exception of mass gatherings) and you can fly them near to people. No other category of drone gives you this freedom. The Mini 2 upped the game further with improvements to its camera offering a 4K 30fps camera and RAW photos.

The Mini 2 has little to improve on for a drone weighing so little and considering its price tag (around £500GBP/$675USD). It already provides a wealth of technology which I wouldn't have even thought possible only a few years ago. Perhaps upping its camera to offer 60fps in 4K might be a welcome addition; some kind of log profile for video to allow proper grading in post production; safety sensors to reduce the likelihood of crashes. All of these would be welcome upgrades but it is most likely that DJI will also include some kind of dedicated FPV mode and integration with their existing or a new version of their FPV goggles.

If DJI take an already proven and commercially successful <250g drone, perform a few upgrades to the camera and safety system and package that all as a FPV capable system; I think that they may well be on to their biggest seller of 2022.

There are no firm details at the moment but you can be sure that the Mini 3 will be a huge hit when it is released later in the year.

End of year review - 2021

Reflecting on a rollercoaster of a year

There is no doubt that 2021 has been a truly unique year for many people. At the beginning of the year, we were all in a post-Christmas Covid-19 lockdown, after what was already a very difficult year for many. From a business perspective it was certainly a challenging time. The colder winter months usually means less work for clients and this is something that I have factored into my yearly plan for quite some time.

I tend to spend these quieter periods reflecting on the work of the previous year and taking time to assess how I could have done things differently. During the busier months from early spring to the end of the summer, despite the many extra hours of sunlight, there just doesn't seem to be enough time in the day. It is easy to get consumed by all of the work opportunities that present themselves but as each year passes I am finding that it is becoming more and more important to find a balance between building the business and maintaining a happy home life. I think, like many people, living with the omnipresent threat of Covid-19 over the last few years has forced many people to re-evaluate this balance in some way. Working so closely with many construction firms, the anecdotal evidence is there to support it. People are selling up from the larger cities to move to more rural settings.

A family that I worked with recently on a photoshoot were doing that exact thing themselves. High flying and self proclaimed 'City people', they had decided that they wanted a different kind of life for their family. They had seen the Northstowe development through one of the videos that I had created at the beginning of the year and were immediately sold on the idea of living in a new community in the countryside but importantly still within commuting distance of their jobs in London.

This time of year also lends itself well to learning. Photography and film is always a learning experience irrespective of how long you've been doing it. I use some of this downtime to try to learn new skills and keep abreast of the direction the industry is taking. Technology is evolving so fast that it can be very easy to rest on your laurels and be left behind. The emergence of FPV (first person view) drone filming is something that has really taken off this year. You may recall the fantastic video of the bowling alley in the US with the tiny indoor FPV drone weaving its way around the venue. This type of filming is something that has really impacted advertising this year as the latest 'must have' and is something that I have considered adding to our list of services.

2021 has also been a year of investment. With a number of projects requiring more ground based filming, I have been steadily adding to our inventory of equipment. A number of different lenses (prime and zoom) to cover every filming scenario; a new camera body (allowing us to film in up to 120 frames per second even at night ); the new DJI Mavic 3 CINE drone giving us a more flexible filming option with stunning low light capability with its 4/3 sensor and proRes recording; and an array of accessories to compliment all of this equipment. This investment will ensure that I am able to meet any project that presents itself in the coming years.

As I write this, having tested postive for Covid-19 (along with the rest of my family) a few days ago, I hope that 2022 is going to be a good one for all of us. It seems that we are all due some better fortune after the last few years. I will be trying my best to make sure that more of the quality time is enjoyed with my family.

Several images taken by Skytech Cambridge have been recently used in an article published by the Cambridge Independent newspaper, in conjunction with Urban Splash , to showcase the latest progress on their site currently under development in Northstowe, Cambridgeshire.

The main 'top down' image is a composite image consisting of several images stitched together. This process was necessary to capture the whole site in one photo which simply couldn't be done due to the 400ft height limit laid down by the CAA to drone operators - even with a relatively wide angle lens on the drone.

This process can be used to capture large areas in great detail and clarity. Perfect for creating large prints to showcase entire construction sites, business parks, schools, farmland or anything else covering a large area.

We also have the ability to create orthomosaic images which create photorealistic representations of an area that can produce surveyor-grade measurements of topography, infrastructure, and buildings.

Skytech Cambridge Achieves CAA GVC Operational Authorisation

One of the most important aspects of any kind of drone flight is safety. The potential harm that even a relatively small flying object could cause shouldn't be underestimated.

Every drone pilot in the UK is subject to rules laid down by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority). The vast majority of these rules extend to every pilot irrespective of the type of drone that they operate.

Currently any drone with a MTOM (Maximum Take-off Mass) of under 250g requires no formal qualifications and very little restrictions with regards to where they can be operated (with the exception of Aiports, Prisons etc which apply to all drones irrespective of weight).

Drones over 250g but under 2kg MTOM can operate in the 'Open Category' until the end of 2023 providing the operator has completed the CAA A2 CofC qualification. This qualification (which Skytech Cambridge also holds) allows drones in this weight category to operate with reduced separation distances from members of the public and within built up areas.

Any drone weighing over 2kg requires a CAA GVC Operational Authorisation (similar to the legacy qualification PfCo) to operate in the same environments. In addition, an extensive 'Operations Manual' which is a detailed document covering every aspect of how the drone operator will conduct each flight to ensure maximum safety, is used to operate each and every flight.

To obtain a CAA OA requires many hours spent in the classroom learning the fundamental laws of aviation, passing a written exam and finally taking an 'Operational Evaluation' (Practical Flight test) to demonstrate the ability to fly a drone safely and competently.

Recently, lead pilot Marc Mann , successfully completed the GVC exam and passed with flying colours. This authorisation from the CAA demonstrates our commitment to safety and to ensure that we remain at the forefront of the drone aviation market.

Skyports partners with Swoop Aero for NHS Drone delivery trial in the UK

Skyports has partnered with Australian health logistics company Swoop Aero to trial drone deliveries of NHS supplies to remote areas of the UK.

With the COVID-19 pandemic causing significant logistical issues for the NHS and its hospitals, delivering regular supplies of essential health equipment, medicines, vaccinations and pathology samples to remote areas has become an increasingly difficult challenge.

The new on-demand service being trialled between two remote Scottish islands will allow for supplies to be transported more regularly and quicker than normal, which is crucial for perishable goods.

Skyports has been working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority during this project and the delivery trial requires a flight of around 17kms which requires that it operates as a BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operation. In the UK, all drone flights must normally be operated with VLOS (Visual Line of Sight) from the operating pilot at all times.

DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced set to launch Mid-March 2020

DJI are set to release their newest enterprise drone, the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced around mid-March 2020.

The new drone based on the existing consumer Mavic architecture will offer a number of upgrades over its predecessor the Mavic 2 Enterprise, notably the inclusion of an upgraded dual-camera setup consisting of a 640 × 512 px at 30Hz thermal camera and a 48MP visual camera with 32x digital zoom (4x lossless).

The thermal camera is a significant upgrade over its predecessor and is the first of its kind to conform to recognised IEC standards. Unlike it's predecessor, however, it will not be compatible with FLIR MSX systems.

The main optical camera is changed from the 1/2.3" CMOS with 12M pixel sensor to a 1/2" CMOS sensor with 48M pixels. The claim by DJI is that the extra pixels captured by the slightly smaller 1/2" sensor will allow for greater flexability in post-processing, especially when it comes to inspection related tasks.

As with the previous interation of the Mavic Enterprise, the new model will have the optional mounting of an RTK Module using NTRIP (no need for a ground station) for more accurate positioning of the drone. This will translate to a better experience when operating in challenging environments that would traditionally cause issues for the standard on-board compass, such as industrial or built up areas. Accuracy is expected to be around 1cm+1ppm (Horizontal) and 1.5cm+1 ppm (Vertical).

It should be noted, however, that whilst the RTK module is likely to be a great addition for a more stable and dependable operating experience, the main optical camera sensor isn't likely to carry enough information to allow the unit to be used as a reliable mapping solution. The best options for this are still either the Phantom 4 RTK with mechanical shutter and 1" Sensor or the M300 RTK.

There is also the option of a mountable Spotlight (11lux @ 30m Straight), Speaker (100 db @ 1 meter distance) and a visual Beacon.

It is also unlikely that it will receive a rating under the new CAA classifications for UAV's (C0-C4) making it a legacy device when the new classifications begin in 2023.

The drone is primarily aimed at search and rescue operations, fire fighters, law enforcement and commerical/industrial inspection.

Pricing is expected to be around £6000 + VAT when it launches in the UK

Drone rules are set to change on 1st January 2021

New rules created by EASA come into force on the 1st January 2021 governing the flying of drones in the UK. The updated rules remove the distinction between commercial and non-commercial flights in favour of a 'risk based category system', however a stringent qualification for companies that wish to fly with additional benefits such as reduced separation distances and in higher risk areas still remains.

In line with these new rules and regulations, SkyTech Cambridge currently hold the new A2 CofC qualification allowing us to fly safely and legally across the UK.

Every project is fully assessed for safety before any flying is commenced. There are many factors to consider when planning a flight such as: the proximity of our drone to other people during the flight, ring-fenced take off and landing zones, weather conditions, altitude requirements, proximity to airports or runways and emergency procedures.

We also take privacy very seriously. Where possible we try to minimise potentially sensitive imagery or video in residential areas where it may be used in the public domain.

UK Military to have Drone Swarms available by next year

The UK Military could have 'Drone Swarms' available by the middle of next year according to Drone Manufacturer Blue Bear .

The MoD has invested a significant sum into the company for this particular project which allows a number of network enabled drones to carry out co-ordinated suicide missions inside enemy lines and wreak havoc with enemy air defences.

The joint project, which has been delayed due to the recent pandemic, has reportedly recommenced at RAF Waddington where a task was originally set back in 2019 by Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson to test the future of Drone Swarm capabilities.

The concept of Drone Swarms has been seen more and more recently in the news but in those cases in the benign setting of synchronised public displays in China and Japan.

It is only a matter of time until the future of warfare will include the use of potentially thousands of Drone Swarms to overwhelm air defences, mass aerial surveillance and remote aerial cyber attacks.

Drone near miss with Passenger Jet at 8,000ft

An air safety report recently released has confirmed that an Easyjet plane flying near Manchester was narrowly missed by a drone flying at almost 8,000ft.

The report details that the drone could be seen by the flight crew from the cockpit and was reported immediately to ATC. The incident has been rated as the 'Highest of Risk' by the UK Airprox Board who monitor Drone safety in the UK. They concluded that there was a "definite risk of collision" and that "It narrowly missed the nose/windscreen of the aircraft".

The drone was described as being approximately half a metre in size, probably about 10kg, and blue in colour.

CAA Drone regulations do not permit any drone to ascend to over 400ft without prior permission.
